Is Nigerian Universities Among The Top 500 Universities In The World

Are Nigerian Universities Among The Top 500 Universities In The World-Nigerian University Education started back then in 1948 following the establishment of the University of Ibadan which is located in Ibadan, Oyo State Nigeria? Although before the university was founded, Yaba College has already existed for over 16 years, with a primary focus on providing post-secondary vocational education and teacher training to Africans. So that, by 1948 students from Yaba College were transferred to Ibadan to form the new University College Ibadan.

Meanwhile, the above two high institutions as the oldest in Nigeria have really produced people in all areas of life, both internationally, nationally and locally. Notable among their alumni are Jaja Wachukwu, Michael Okpara, Gabriel Okaru, T.M. Aluko, etc, for Yaba College, while Chinua Achebe, Wole Soyinka, Ken Saro Wiwa, Emake Anyaoku, William Kumuyi, Christoper Okigbo, Elechi Amadi, among others are the famous alumni of University College Ibadan.

Similarly, other Universities in Nigeria have also done great in producing people who have worked tirelessly in savaging and promoting humanity.

However, despite all these contributions that Nigerian Universities have contributed to the country and indeed to the world in general, Nigerian universities are not recognized, respected or even ranked globally.

Only three Nigerian Universities were rated by The Times Higher Education World University Rankings to be among the top tertiary institutions in the world in its 2019 ranking. And these universities are:

Covenant University ranked 636
The University of Ibadan ranked 677
The University of Nigeria ranked 1000+
And the questions are:

Why is there no Nigerian University that is listed among the Top 500 University in the world?
What are the criteria for ranking / selecting these top 500 Universities in the world.?
Are Nigerian Universities unaware of these ranking criteria as to work hard to make up the list?
The above questions are answered simultaneously below.

Why No Nigerian University Made The List of The Top 500 Universities In The World.
The Higher Education System in Nigeria is regulated by three Agencies under the supervision of the Ministry of Education. These agencies are:

National Universities Commission (NUC).
National Board For Technical Education (NBTE), and
The National Commission For College of Education (NCCE).
These agencies under the strict supervision of the Ministry of Education have the primary responsibility to carry out the following functions:

Establishing minimum standards for academic programs.
Granting approval for the establishment of institutions.
Regulating all academic activities.
Granting approval for all academic programs.
Ensuring quality assurance of all academic programs.

Meanwhile, the above agencies that are supposed to help in ranking Nigerian Universities both nationally and “internationally” have not been doing their best. In fact, the last ranking of Nigerian Universities locally was in 2002. Which is very bad!

International Rating Organizations of universities such as:

Webometrics Ranking of World Universities(Webometrics).
Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU).
Center for World University Rankings (CWUR).
Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) World University Rankings and
Times Higher Education (THE) World University Ranking, depends on the following factors to rank universities globally
Local ranking of each university.
Alumni produced by each university.
The infrastructural base of each university.
Type/number of Courses accredited in each university.
Online presence/ website management of each university.
Recommendations and thesis wrote about each university,
And above all, Research instruments and scientific methodologies adopted in each university.
The Points…
The reason no Nigerian University is in the list of the top 500 universities in the world is not because of the poor performance of Nigerian Students but because of the following:

1. Poor or perhaps, lack of local ranking of Nigerian Universities by the appropriate agencies that are charged to be doing that. Such bodies are:

National Universities Commission (NUC).
National Board For Technical Education (NBTE), and
The National Commission For College of Education (NCCE).
2. Poor Infrastructural base of Nigerian Universities. Although, the Nigerian University Education is beginning to tackle this particular problem, much still needs to be done.

3. The online presence/ website management of most universities in Nigeria is very poor. Just of recent many universities in Nigeria started checking their results online. Similarly, so many Nigerian government-owned universities do not have an online presence, such as

Good students’ portal.
Staff portal.
Online database for scientific and research purposes.
4. The Research instruments and scientific methodologies adopted in most Nigerian Universities is very much outdated. And the government should help to address this problem.

Therefore, it is only when the Nigerian University Education adopts the best global educational standard, that they can be listed among the top 10 universities in the world.
